How to Build a Life as an Independent Artist

The Journey
Never has it been easier to produce and release your own songs, easier in terms of technical possibilities. The craft and the journey are still a lot of work, patience, exploration, tears, sweat, and questioning your own sanity. The list goes on.

I’ve taken this journey many times myself, starting from a tiny seed of an idea and turning it into a fully promoted release. Some of my songs have made it onto official playlists, and I’ve been lucky to get national and international radio plays. A small but steady group of fans from all over the world buy my vinyl and CDs, and I’ve been able to make income from the songs I write.

It All Starts With You
So yes, I am living proof that what often seems impossible actually is possible. People say that no one in the music industry, not even the major labels, truly knows what works anymore when it comes to breaking a new artist. As confusing and hard as it can be to figure out how to reach new listeners, there has never been a better time for independent artists. There are countless free platforms where you can promote your music and get it heard. But it all starts with you and with the songs.

The Challenges and Growth
When I’m not focusing on my own artistry, I help others with theirs. I meet many talented new artists every week, and I love seeing how their unique identity and confidence can grow. The full commitment it takes to live as an artist is not an easy one to maintain. But if you stay focused and have someone to help you prioritise and plan when doubt creeps in, you’ll have a much better chance of getting your songs from your home studio to an audience. And this does not have to mean you have to hustle nonstop.

I’ve been there, working two side jobs, staying up until two in the morning to finish demos after my day job, and still living on a very tight budget. If you are a new artist, there will probably be a period like this in your life too. It will not necessarily be a bad thing, because this could be the time when you get really good at your craft, when you find your unique sound, and when you get to know yourself better.

Finding Yourself as an Artist
Knowing yourself can be the key to creating something authentic that speaks to others through your art. Chaos, heartache, and difficult times can also be strong catalysts for creativity. I am not a fan of the idea of the suffering artist, but I do believe that going through life’s challenges can make you a better songwriter. You will have something real to say.

Even though it is hard work, having a network of support around you will help you thrive rather than burn out. Here is a quick list of the advice I wish I had when I was starting out:

The List - Practical Advice For New Artists

• Practice self-care

• Write a lot of songs before choosing which ones to release

• Never rush a release, plan it carefully

• Accept that you are also a marketer

• Have a day job to help finance the promotion of your art

• Apply for grants to support your work

• Start building a team

• Do not wait to be discovered, start building your own following now

Join my workshop for more free, in-depth advice on all of the above. It will take place on the 23rd of September and is made for new artists who want guidance on their journey. You can sign up to the workshop here. Bring your questions too, and I’ll leave time at the end to offer personal guidance and feedback to as many of you as I can. I’d love to meet you, hear about your dreams, and help you take your next steps as an artist.

Until then, take care and always… keep singing

With love
